Monhegan Brewing Co. is a family owned and operated small brewery which is run by Matt and Mary Weber, who are the residents of Monhegan Island. A respected member of the Maine brewing community, Danny specializes in delicious “big” IPAs and spectacular malt-forward stouts. He oversees every brew at Monhegan Brewing Company while passing on his craft to Matt and Mary.
Monhegan Brewing Co. is located on Lobster Cove road on the edge of the village. The place is a 7 barrel establishment where they use all Weyerman German malt and a wide array of hops, some of which is grown right on the island. The place brews 8 months a year, April through the end of November, with the last few batches aging over the winter months.
While you won’t get much of a variety at Monhegan Brewing Co. the limited brews they produce are all super delicious. Interestingly, all of their beers are named after Monhegan landmarks or certain aspects of island living. Many local artists have designed the labels for the bottled brews which are all unique.
The Balmy Days Citra- Hopped Kolsch of Monhegan Brewing Co. is made from pilsner malt, a touch of wheat, and German Kölsch yeast that gives this beer its traditional light body and somewhat sweet flavor. Since a generous amount of hops are used the brew has a citrus tang to it. You can also try Trap Stacker Special Ale which is a fall seasonal beer that has higher ABV providing it a warming alcohol finish. It has a perfect balance of malt and hop. Other great beers that you can find at Monhegan Brewing Co. include Lobster Cove Amerian Pale Ale, Flyway Rye IPA, Dead Man’s Cove Black IPA, etc.
